List of Musical Theatre Couples

  2. Angel and Collins
  3. Elphaba and Fiyero
  4. Marian and Harold Hill
  5. Laurey and Curly
  6. Belle and Beast
  7. Catherine and Pippin
  8. Lisel and Roulf
  9. Nala and Simba
  10. Nellie and Emelie

  14. Cosette and Marius
  15. Liat and Joe Cable
  16. Mimi and Roger
  17. Jasmine and Aladdin
  18. Captain and Maria
  19. Maureen and Joanne
  20. Tracy and Link
  21. Maria and Tony
  22. Audrey and Seymour
  23. Penny and Seaweed

All of these couples are quite varied in many ways due to many factors. Some of them like Fiyero and Elphaba, Raoul and Christine, and Marius and Cosette are part of strong and complex love triangles. Some are quite mature like Fiyero and Elphaba. Some are Disney couples, which have some kind of magic behind them. Some have flaws and not perfect, but still love each other such as Roger and Mimi. Some of them are part of a musical that the entire story is focused on them like Christine and Raoul or Emelie and Nellie or Tony and Maria or Beast and Belle.

Some of them are tragic like Tony and Maria. Some are gay and lesbian couples like Angel and Collins and Joanne and Maureen. So you have couples in a wide range. But one thing you may notice is that many of them are young couples.

But part of the thrill of romance in musicals is how varied they are and even their main song shows that. Some of these couples have more than one romantic song but they still have a main song. While Tony and Maria’s main song is Tonight, other romantic songs are Maria, and Somewhere. While Belle’s and the Beast’s main song is Beauty and the Beast, they also have Something There and Beast has heartbreaking song like If I Can’t Love Her,  and Evermore (in the movie). While Fiyero and Elphaba have the main love song, As Long as Your’e Mine”, Elphaba sings an unrequited love song, I’m Not That Girl in act I. While Roger and Mimi’s main song is I Should Tell You, they have Light My Candle, Without You and Your Eyes. Some of these other songs are sung by both of them or sung by one of them.

I know I have talked a lot about romance in musicals lately, but it still is February. I wanted to highlight just how varied musical couples are. Earlier in the month, I brought up some favorite couples, but this post highlights some of the couples that I am not the biggest fan of.

  1. This is a great list of couples! It really does show what a wide range of couples there can be in musicals and I think that that’s so cool!
