Who is Eponine?

Back to Les Mis: One of my all-time favorite musical characters is Eponine. She is an interesting character in many ways.

Major Spoilers:

She is the daughter of Monsieur and Madame Thenardier, who appear to love her as a child. However, as a child, you already get an idea of the environment she is going to be growing up in. You see that they are abusive through how they treat Young Cosette and you see them pickpocket their customers so you already get an idea.

Later, Eponine’s life becomes even worse. She is now living in extreme poverty and is more involved in her parent’s schemes. You see just how alone she is in life. She hasn’t been shown much kindness. She is streetwise due to the crimes she has committed with her family. She is so alone in life and you realize that her parents do not love her and just use her for their advantage. ¬†Despite all of this, she still has a spark of goodness in her, and you see this through her love for Marius.

Unknown

Eponine can see the kindness in Marius, and that shows that she still has a spark of goodness in her. All because of the kindness he shows her, she falls in love with him. He is all she has in life, and he bring her joy. The sad truth is he does not realize she loves him, and he later falls in love with Cosette. However, none of that stops her from being in love with him. Her love for him is extremely deep and strong that she will do anything for him. She agrees to find Cosette for him even though it breaks her. She stands up to her father when he is about to rob Valjean’s house and that is done out of love for Marius.

She risks her life several times for Marius even if it breaks her even if it means losing him forever. She makes the choice to go to the barricade. Her love for Marius leads her to sacrifice her life for him when he is about to get shot. Her love for Marius is her greatest strength even if it leads to her death. Her death is the happiest moment of her life because Marius is there for her in that moment holding her and comforting her despite all the pain. Even though she is a Thenardier, she still has that spark of that goodness found within her.

Who is Fiyero?

Fiyero is the male romantic lead of Wicked and just like Marius part of a love triangle.

Possible Major and Minor Spoilers:

Fiyero is a character that is very hard to get to know. He goes through a very incredible arc through the course of the story. He starts out as a bit of a jerk when he arrives at Shiz. This one moment is important: he starts going out with Glinda.

In the Lion Cub Scene, Fiyero starts to soften up a bit. It almost appears that he has a crush on Elphaba, but deep down does not realize it. The Lion Cub Scene is his first big major character development scene. What is fascinating about Fiyero is that he seems to develop a lot during speaking scenes a lot more than singing scenes. All throughout act I, he has a stronger connection with Elphaba than Glinda foreshadowing act II.

Act II, at the beginning he is hearing all of these rumors about Elphaba. He knows they are not true. This is the moment when he realizes that he loves Elphaba. So he goes from a jerk to someone who cares and now he has matured. To Glinda’s surprise, he choose to break up with her. ¬†You find more maturity in him when he confesses his love to Elphaba during “As Long as Your’e Mine”. But you see just how much he loves her when the guards are about to arrest her, but he arrives and tells the guards to let her go. That to me takes courage. So he is also courageous and due to that, he is taken to the fields to be tortured.

Fiyero is much more complex than he appears. He starts out as this cool guy waiting to have a good time who is a bit of a a jerk to this mature and courageous young man. By the end, he has accepted Elphaba for who she is.

“Summer Nights”

June 16th, I got to see Grease at CPCC. So in one month, I saw two musicals at the same college. I was expecting CPCC to also do an incredible job with Grease as well. About my history with Grease, I saw the movie in elementary school, and I remember that my favorite song was “We go Together” because of the silly lyrics. I was glad that I actually saw it live. When I saw Les Mis with my family at CPCC five years ago, we sat in row Q, but for Grease, we were in row S so it was crazy how I was in almost the same row.

Just like Oklahoma, Grease used a minimal set, and it worked. They moved the set pieces on and off. I loved the lighting they used, and at different times throughout the show, the different lights changed colors and I loved seeing that.

About the cast, the moment the show began, I heard the ensemble start singing and they just were incredible. Just by hearing that opening, I knew I had once again another cast that I would love. CPCC knows how to cast a wonderful cast. It was like seeing Grease for the first time. There were songs I never heard before like “Freddy my Love” and “Magic Changes”, and those were incredible. CPCC got special permission to use songs that were not originally in the stage show and I am glad that they did. It made this production unique. The different costumes were wonderful and I loved the T-Birds and the Pink Ladies costumes.

Grease is just a fun and exciting show to watch. It is different than watching the movie.

Who is the Phantom?

In my opinion, the Phantom is the antagonist of Phantom of the Opera.

Possible Spoilers:

He is a very mysterious and dark character. He is a troubled man with a very tragic and horrible past. He has been judged his entire life for his deformed face and was never shown love or compassion growing up. He is ashamed of his face so he hides it by wearing the mask. He falls in love with Christine, but that love falls unrequited, but he doesn’t deal with it well. He responds to his entire situation in revenge and in destructive ways. He wants everything to go his way. He wants Christine to be the star and tricks her by pretending to be her “angel of music”.

Phantom manipulatives Christine on multiple occasions. He threatens the Opera House. He causes the chandelier to fall during a performance. So he does many destructive things during the course of the show. When Christine falls in love with Raoul, he feels betrayed and seeks even more revenge, and he plans to kill Raoul and wants Christine all to himself. In the final lair scene, he makes Christine choose between having him kill Raoul or staying with him. But through an act of compassion shown by Christine, he finally lets them go. Christine kisses him and that allows Phantom to let him go. The Phantom does not know how to handle situations well and cannot accept his deformed face and has led a very tragic life.

Who is Belle?

Belle is the main character of Beauty and the Beast.

She is an independent young girl who wants more to life than her town. She is seen as odd to everyone in her town. She is a bookworm and strongly loves her father. This is especially shown when she takes her father’s place at the Beast’s castle. This act takes a lot of courage, but it does show just how much she loves her father. She can tell just how cold and selfish the Beast’s heart is.

Unknown

Belle does teach the Beast important lessons later on. She does teach him the importance of love. She and Beast soon fall in love with love, but slowly over time. Even though she was originally imprisoned, the Beast eventually lets her go. You see her love for her father when she looks in Beast’s mirror and sees her father treated unfairly by the citizens in her town. So Belle overall is this strong, independent, brave young woman who shows that beauty comes from within and knows the power of love.
