I first saw this tag on The Phantom of the Bookshelf. Originally, at first glance I did not think I would want to do this. For some reason, I thought it would be all about romance, but once I began reading it, I realized it had more to do with our relationship with books. Don’t know if I will be able to answer all of these, but will answer the answers I can do.
Phase 1: Initial Attraction-A book you bought because of the cover?
I have never bought a book because of its cover.
Phase 2: First Impressions-A book you got because of its summary?
The summary is usually what makes me buy a book. If I dislike the summary, there is no way I will try out the book.
Phase 3: Sweet Talk-A book with sweet writing?
Well, multiple books can fit under this category. Both were series- Howl’s and Narnia felt that way. Narnia feels the sweetest in the first three books- as by publication date.
Phase 4: First Date-The first book of a series that makes you want to pick up the rest of the series?
Literally after just one paragraph, I was like I need the rest of the series. I was grabbed in pretty quickly in this book.
I believe another book was like this- The Golden Compass. I got really interested in Lyra, the daemon, and the world. While I don’t agree with a lot of Phillip Pullman’s viewpoints, that does not stop be from loving the series.
I didn’t get grabbed into as quickly as A Darker Shade of Magic as I did with this series. Read His Dark Materials after Shades of Magic. I already fell in love with Lila, and in so many ways reminded me of Lyra.
Phase 5: Late Night Phone Calls-A book that kept you up all night?
This has never happened to me- only times I would be up at night most likely belonged to required books in school.
Phase 6: Always On My Mind-A book you could not stop thinking about?
At first, A Darker Shade of Magic kept on being on my mind. That mostly happened when I wanted the entire series. Now, in terms of series, I keep on thinking about this series. Shades of Magic was my favorite series of 2020.
Below is the entire series.
Phase 7: Meeting the Parents-A book you would recommend to your family and friends?
This is tough considering different people’s interests in book- so will be using different genres. Mainly going to focus on fantasy.
Fantasy standalone (adult)- maybe Spinning Silver or Uprooted
Fantasy series- well, that belongs to Shades of Magic
Nonfiction- I actually recommend a number of people read this particular book. The Day the World Came to Town- that is the story Come From Away is based off of. It is a type of book that multiple people need to read- the best of humanity shown during such tragic events. It feels extremely relevant now due to the pandemic.
Phase 8: Thinking About the Future-A book or series you know you will reread many times in the future?
I don’t know if many times is accurate- I only reread Narnia. Just like I am going to reread Harry Potter. But have no plans on reading them multiple times- so far only once.
I can tell you an upcoming series I hope to read- Nevermoor. While not related, I kept on being told Harry Potter fans will love it. Due to that, I hope to eventually start the series (own the first two books so far: can’t start until Hollowpox goes on paperback
