Yes, there are a LOT of heartbreaking songs in musicals, but not all of them deal with loss and suffering. Growing up, I was unaware of heartbreak in musical theatre. Yes, I discovered sad through Wicked, but heartbreak was still not there. Les Mis would tell be heartbreak was a musical theatre emotion- well, Les Mis really did challenge what I knew.
