Son of Neptune Review

PERCY IS CONFUSED. When he awoke from his long sleep, he didn’t know much more than his name. His brain fuzz is lingering, even after the wolf Lupa told him he is a demigod and trained him to fight with the pen/sword in his pocket. Somehow Percy manages to make it to a camp for half-bloods, despite the fact that he has to keep killing monsters along the way. But the camp doesn’t ring any bells with him. The only thing he can recall from his past is another name: Annabeth

HAZEL IS SUPPOSED TO BE DEAD. When she lived before, she didn’t do a very good job of it. Sure, she was an obedient daughter, even when her mother was possessed by greed. But that was the problem—when the Voice took over her mother and commanded Hazel to use her “gift” for an evil purpose, Hazel couldn’t say no. Now because of her mistake, the future of the world is at risk. Hazel wishes she could ride away from it all on the stallion that appears in her dreams.

FRANK IS A KLUTZ. His grandmother says he is descended from heroes and can be anything he wants to be, but he doesn’t see it. He doesn’t even know who his father is. He keeps hoping Apollo will claim him, because the only thing he is good at is archery—although not good enough to win camp war games. His bulky physique makes him feel like an ox, especially in front of Hazel, his closest friend at camp. He trusts her completely—enough to share the secret he holds close to his heart.

Son of Neptune is the 2nd book is Heroes of Olympus. Based on the title of the book alone, you can tell this book is more connected to Roman Mythology. You now learn of three more demigods who are part of the big seven (one of which we already met)- Hazel, Frank, and the famous Percy Jackson.

Just like Jason, Percy has the same problem. He can’t remember anything- as in Camp Half-Blood, etc…., In the book, I kept on hoping his memory will be restored. Despite that amnesia, he still knew how to use his powers, could recognize some people he already met, and how to fight.

Hazel and Frank do have difficult pasts and are underdogs at Camp Jupiter. As a result of being in the 5th Cohort. I enjoyed their friendship in the book. Between all three characters, I loved when they showed compassion to Ella, a harpy. MOST of the time, I dislike harpies, but Ella was an exception. Hazel had an incredible relationship to Arion, one of the fastest horses- sort of like Percy’s relationship to Blackjack.

Camp Jupiter is almost run more like war camp in a way- based on where they sleep, the medals. There are activities called War Games. Quests almost seem more complicated since there isn’t an oracle that would tell a proper prophecy. Percy, Hazel, and Frank had to venture to a place beyond the gods, which would that quest really dangerous. Hazel- daughter of Pluto (Hades) and Frank- son of Mars (Aries).

Son of Neptune is a good book that really shows you need to read Percy Jackson and the Olympians previously. Only because Percy lost his memories in this book- so you might be wondering why certain characters show up in his dreams or or why he was remembering Annabeth or why was he able to fight like that?
