As many know, my main WIP is Tale of the Cattail Forest. Hard to believe how far it has come- gotten all the way to its 6th draft. The story is a middle grade (8-12) fantasy centering on Fairy Frogs and Toads. We have Sparkle as our protagonist and Sarge as our antagonist. The main theme of the book is friendship.
Below is the summary blurb:
After moving to Fairy Creek where the Fairy Frogs live, Sparkle explores her new surroundings to pursue her craft. She is always looking for adventure and new places to draw, but when she ventures out beyond Fairy Creek into Graysloup, she encounters some toads, meets new challenges, and makes unlikely friendships. The friendships all begin when she decides to befriend a young toad named Marge.
Things become challenging after encountering Sarge, leader of the toads, who tries to prevent all the friendships. Will the courage and cleverness of the Fairy Frogs stop Sarge from breaking up these new friendships? The frogs and toads learn how to use their talents and explore new ways of developing compassion and friendships
I think I now am on draft 7- not much writing has to be done, and the time has come to focus on illustrations. It is my responsibility to draw the map of The Cattail Forest, which has four main locations- Fairy Creek, Cattail Marsh, Graysloup, and The Bog. The thing to note about The Bog is that it is located in Graysloup, but deep as in hard to find. The other illustrations- that requires an illustrator as I am not good at drawing.
Fairy Creek– of all the locations in The Cattail Forest, this is the most vivid- the place where The Fairy Frogs live. It has cattails, creeks, a Daisy-shaped Gazebo, treehouses, and painted pebbles lining the creeks. The creeks are clear so always fun to be around. The Gazebo is always a fun place to hang out especially on performance days. Plus if it is raining, usually something is planned and that project is done in the biggest treehouse.
Cattail Marsh– While the Fairy Frogs no longer live here, it still is one of the locations. It is more like a neighbor to Graysloup. It has less space to do art projects than the place they moved to.
Graysloup– who would want to live here? Murky and humid all the time, stillwater that is dirty and muddy, and not much color, plus ditches exist here. The Toads have to sleep underneath a highway
The Bog– Yes, it exists in Graysloup, but only Sarge knows about it. His main source of comfort growing up. He made it a playground of sorts. Everything is deeper here- the amount of mud, how deep the ditches are, and the deepness of the creeks and even the color of the water is less appealing. It is just hidden so hard to find.
